It takes a lot to get
your brain
right side up after it's been jostled
mightily by
a flying deer.
You don't just get up
and shake a fist
at the absurdity of it all...
Instead there's a helicopter
ride
and years of trying
to read children's books,
and speaking in complete sentences!
But here you are, driving, laughing
and renewing
your motorcycle license.
This time it's the deer
that have to watch out.
No mountain worth climbing
gives up its secrets easily;
you need to earn
every foothold
and feel the rise of your
body
getting closer to the summit,
hidden from view.
One assumes there's a peak,
but attention must
be payed to the
boot jammed into a crevice.
It is here, upon the finite
space of a rocky ledge,
that all the rest
will be determined.
Put a couple of steel levers
in his hands
and watch a cellar excavation
appear with remarkable
accuracy.
Try and get the floor
of a dirt hole level and you'll
be impressed by his eye.
There needed to be
a cigarette wedged into
the corner of his mouth
with an ash longer than the unfiltered
Sweet Caporal he smoked.
He sat, perched high on
an orange machine
and wielded power
and efficiency.
At home, the steel came from
his wife;
no machine required!
A face from the Pieta,
the wooden Crucifix,
Mary embracing the child,
like holding up
our favorite cats
in total adoration.
This face has been with us
since the Renaissance
and here it is again,
a timeless profile
in the tropics,
creating other faces
against the perfect
original.
