Make a Liar of Time

Make a Liar of Time

Make a Liar of Time

S.C.

Linear time is a deception

since many I love

have not appeared in it

for decades and longer;

instead, they live on as if

we met for coffee

yesterday.

 Voices on the phone

and in dreams

deny the “facts”

of time past.

There are no distances

between inhabiters of

memory,

no clock keeping its own

council.

When I see her

it will be the day

after I saw her last

and that’s closer to my

inner reality

than any clock or calendar can

measure.

We’ll hug and sit together and continue

a conversation that

always mattered.

In the breath of time

between our parting,

forty-five years ago,

and dropping in on her

for tea,

we’ll make a liar

of time.
