Lyndsay

Once, I asked her to become a cat,
and before my eyes, furry paws
came up, poking.
A soft purring
floated out of her
whiskered face.
I scratched her ear and
she rolled over and stretched.

I asked her to be a banana
and, magically her body curved
into an arc
and a hand reached up
to peel it…

and that was only the beginning.

She changed into a rock
and a flower
and a soaring bird,
right before my eyes.

So, I guess it’s no surprise that
the challenge of cancer was
no match for this
inventive girl.

She became patient, wise,
funny,
and extraordinarily brave
because that’s what life asked
her to be.

Lyndsay has taught us all
that we can be anything
we wish
just by believing it’s possible.

Today, we celebrate Lyndsay
for all the things
she has become.

A teasing cat,
a firm banana,
a solid rock,
a beautiful flower
and a soaring bird.
